The Grass Is Greener Next Door Syndrome
Do you get caught up scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and all the other platforms of social media madness?
I know I do.
Social media gives you front row access to all the amazing things your fellow online beauty biz junkies are doing in their businesses!
At first it’s fun and exciting and you can’t believe how small the beauty biz world really is.
You feel happy for your fellow practitioners and you give a big ole’ “like” to that expensive new piece of equipment so-and-so just purchased for their treatment room. From the bottom of your heart, you comment “congrats” when they share the numbers they had surrounding their “best week ever.”
Then, you turn off the computer and look at your schedule for the next week and see that it’s not as full as you want it to be. Or, maybe you check your texts to see that a client is canceling last minute and “will get back to you to reschedule.”
You start to feel inadequate. You start to feel ashamed that you’re not doing better. You feel like shrinking or crawling into a hole somewhere!
You need to know that you’re not alone in this.
Trolling social media can certainly leave you feeling like the grass is greener on the other side (or at the other business).
It’s the digital age and times have sure changed from when I started in this industry. When I started, I had NO idea what my competition was doing. None. There was no Facebook, no Instagram, no Pinterest, not many websites, no Groupon offerings being delivered to my inbox, etc. And in many ways that ignorance was bliss.
Unfortunately, it’s really hard to be oblivious and remove yourself from all the online noise, so I will share with your how I deal with my own “grass is greener next door syndrome.”
- First, I remind myself that everyone online is human and well all have our own Triumphs and Challenges. Just the other day I posted that my water heater blew up for the 3rd time and started flooding my treatment room. The 1st comment that popped up was, “OMG, Lori you have bad days too?” Yes. I. Do. Just like every other business owner. My sh*t breaks, my clients cancel, my bank account gets low… and I could keep going, but I think you get it. ☺
- I give myself an online break. Just last night I came home from work and instead of answering all the posts that I was tagged on, I had a nice dinner, put on my PJ’s and crawled into bed to watch mindless TV.
- I invest in ME! This third one is the most powerful way that I overcome the “ick.” When I am immersed in becoming a better business owner, I can really let go of all the online distractions – I actually don’t have time for them. Billionaire, Warren Buffet has addressed the value of investing in one’s self, calling it the best asset you can invest in.
This third way is why I always…
- invest in the services of a good business coach,
- commit to attending 2 trade shows a year,
- take a weekly webinar or online class in an area that I feel I can use support in, and
- attend at least 1 big business-building conference every year.
This isn’t all hyperbole – it’s proven many times over. You have to invest in yourself to keep yourself growing. We don’t live in a stagnant world where you can learn what’s in a book or program and be good to go forever. Nope, the world around you is always growing and changing and as a living breathing human being, you have to do the same if you want to stay in the game.
If you are ready to cure your own “Grass Is Greener Next Door Syndrome,” I have the perfect remedy for you… It’s all about Energizing, Expanding and Evolving, as a beauty biz practitioner. If you are ready for a powerful shift in your business and the way you think about it, the Esthetician Success Master Class is THE place to be. This is the event to attend if you want to see clear, measurable results THIS YEAR. I hope to see you there!
