Embarrassed. I can’t believe I am telling you this!

Recently I posted on FB:

“Hmmmm….. Trying to decide on an Esthetician Success Newsletter topic??? Any requests?”

And…

You guys gave me a ton of awesome ideas. Thank You!

One gal responded with the following:

“It would be nice to read something on being professional. I often hear girls talk about their personal life to clients. I understand many clients instigate it but there should be a line on how much the professional should share, and how long they talk for. I try to tell enough to keep a nice friendly relationship but try to put an end to it so they can relax as much as possible. I don’t want to be rude and ignore them but I can’t stand it when I hear the Esthetician going on and on about themselves. Just a thought! It’s something I would like to read about.”

Yikes!

This question sadly reminded me of a “not so great time” in my esthetician biz.

Ok, here’s where you get some inside scoop on my personal life. Scoop that I am not super proud of – but it happened, I learned from it and I hope you can gain some awareness from my mistake.

One of the worst financial times in my business was when I was going through my divorce. It had nothing to do with the legality of the divorce, it had to do with what I was sharing with my clients.

Weird thing was…

I didn’t mope around. I didn’t feel super angry or depressed. I didn’t male bash.

But,

I was feeling pretty stressed. I had lost about 25lbs and this did not look good on me. My clients 1st reaction when they saw me was, “OMG Lori! What is wrong?”

I would tell them about the divorce, thinking I was not sharing too many details.

Guess what?

These clients were not re-booking like they normally would have. Clients were literally staying away!

Why? I believe…

Because I had always provided them a fun, stress free place that was about them… and they were not feeling this new shift. AT. ALL.

So please, if you want to grow your biz, and fill it full of valuable clients, make their time pleasant and make it about them. Even if they ask how your life is try to keep it short, sweet, light and positive.

A valuable lesson was learned – people come to us to LOOK and FEEL beautiful – we must respect this.
