Have you seen your treatment room?

Lori-ladderA few things have happened that motivated me to write this newsletter for you, my fellow estheticians. And all of them involve me setting my ego aside and speaking from a place of being totally human.

  1. A famous rock star’s wife (who is somewhat famous herself, and very outspoken) was lying on my treatment room table and said, “you have cobwebs hanging from the ceiling fan and your air conditioning vent is so dirty that it’s disgusting”.Ok, I know she loves me so I wasn’t completely devastated when she made me aware.
  1. I recently hired an assistant, who is also an esthetician, and when she looked around my room, she said, “we really need to organize and label, Lori.” Thank you Angela! This was a huge eye opener and made me realize a few things:
      1. I need help – I have been doing way too much on my own for way too long.
      2. Holy crap! I can’t believe how out-of-control my organized Virgo life had gotten – without me even noticing!
      3. Wow! A second set of honest eyes can really create a better you 🙂
  1. A new client informed me that she left her former esthetician because her wax pot was repulsive and commented that she was thrilled to see that mine was so clean.

This newsletter was written as a nice gentle reminder to create awareness in your world.

We are all guilty of this…

Our surroundings become overly familiar and blind spots are created in our vision.
When we become comfortable with our surroundings we often overlook “stuff” that others may find to be offensive, dirty or just plain gross. Others meaning clients or YIKES – STATE BOARD.
So today why not…

  1. Head in to work 15 minutes early and assess your room.Use “client eyes” when doing this: lie on the bed, sit on the chair where they take their shoes off and really stop and see it from a different perspective.Have a pen and paper handy so you can make notes of what you need to tidy up.
  1. Check for labels and I bet you will find that there are at least a few that are missing or are in need of being replaced. When state board inspected me they wanted to see these things:
      1. My driver’s license and esthetician license
      2. Quats container
      3. Clean instrument container
      4. Dirty instrument container
  1. Look at your wax pot and make sure it’s not screaming, “I AM GROSS!”
  2. Have someone else scan your room and give you honest feedback. Fresh eyes will see things that you won’t – so welcome and embrace the review.
  3. REPEAT EVERY FEW MONTHS.
