Letting Go
Let’s do a quick check in…
Are the things you are spending your time on depleting or enriching you?
It’s easy to slip into a rut and not even realize it and then you start feeling exhausted and burnt out. You may even start wondering if something is physically wrong with you.
I speak from experience here as this is where I recently found myself. The good news is that I’ve been here before so I quickly recognized the problem and consequently have been doing a whole-life detox by letting go of anything that is depleting me.
When I say “anything,” I am not kidding. In this post, I’m sharing the changes I have been making. Some have been simple and others have required some bravery.
The process this time has been time-consuming and even emotional at times, but so many amazing things have been showing up to replace the things I am letting go of.
First, a little backstory…
Why did I do this?
You might call me crazy, but you know that I always tell you the truth. In July, I had a reading done by a famous clairvoyant. This woman told me if I didn’t create considerable change in my life by September 1st, I would be stagnant for the next 5 years.
YIKES!
This “create change statement” hit me hard because I tend to be a creature of habit, but being stagnant for 5 years was way scarier than the idea of creating change.
So, just how did I delete what was depleting me? Here’s the step by step process I’ve followed:
Step 1
- It all started with purging any belongings that I didn’t love and no longer needed. A great tip my friend Annie gave me, is to look at (and touch) everything you are letting go of and see if there is an emotional attachment, if not give it a blessing of gratitude and then let it go. (Recommended book, The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo)
- I spent 5 hours gathering old paperwork to take to a local shredder. Cost – $15.00 to shred 10 years of paperwork and other personal paper items that I have collected.
- I spent another 4 hours cleaning out closets; bagging up clothes and deciding which piles I should donate where. I gave some to friends, some to gals at the spa, some to clients and some to local shelters. Rudy my dog even donated a few beds and blankets to the local dog shelter. (This was a hard one because I had to leave the shelter without an animal in need of a home!)
Step 2
I got word that I had to move out of my apartment in LA that I had been living in for the last 9 years. Eeeep! I did NOT see that coming and was not prepared. Thank goodness I had already purged all the paperwork and clothes. It just goes to show you that everything happens for a reason.
My new place will not be ready for a few months so I am doing the Eat, Pray, Love thing through Airbnb.
I lit a “home blessing” candle that a fellow esthetician sent me (thank you, Christina xo), to help me transition into my new space in Los Angeles. You know how I love ritual 😉
Now, as if one move is not challenging enough, (many of you know I split my time between two Southern CA locations)…
The next day my sister called to tell me a home in her Palm Springs neighborhood was for sale and I just had to come look at it.
Well, the house felt like a perfect place for us, so now I am selling my home in Palm Springs and moving into her neighborhood, which has been a dream of mine for several years. Many of my friends think I am crazy, but I am so ready for this – it feels refreshing!
I would never have guessed that I would be moving to a different place in LA and selling my Palm Springs home at the same time (or at all, really), but I am actually excited about it now and ready to welcome all things new and good!
Step 3
This is where it became emotional for me. I decided to take a look at my relationships.
One thing I know about myself is that I tend to let unhealthy-for-me people stay in my life way too long. These are people who are energy vampires, disrespectful to me and others or those who don’t honor reciprocal type relationships and boundaries. I’ve spent too much time trying to ‘heal’ these relationships and make them better when the truth is that they just needed to be released freeing me to instead focus on relationships that enrich me. **For the record, Jay is not among those I’m letting go of – I know some of you are wondering 😉
I started with my Facebook page.
- I decided to unfriend or unfollow anyone who was not a family member or a personal friend.
- Then, I removed anyone who regularly posts things that create a negative reaction inside me. I know this is probably triggering something in some of you because we all have these Facebook peeps in our lives and they cause us to feel nervous, anxious or irritated.
- I came back to the reason I have a personal Facebook page in the first place and it’s to stay connected with those who I have a personal relationship with. My personal page was never intended to be for my business so I restored it to its original intent.
As far as all other relationships, I have re-committed to focusing only on the ones that feed my soul. I now devote my time and energy to those who enrich me. I focus on those who make me smile, those I can make smile, those who really “get” me, those who appreciate my advice and those I feel comfortable leaning on for advice.
I spend my time with those who I can trust because trust and loyalty are two things that I give 100% to the people in my life.
I now commit to taking the time to build powerful relationships with those who share similar core values and I am practicing a healthy way of letting go of those who do not.
So what about you? Is it time to detox your life? I would love for you to share what enriches or depletes you and how you welcome or purge these things from your life.
