Rethinking how you network for your biz

Years ago when I first hired a business coach, she suggested that I try joining a few networking groups to help me bring new clients in to my beauty biz practice.

Honestly, (insert deep breath here) I felt uneasy with this for a number of reasons…

  • I can be shy and introverted.
  • I felt weird promoting my business and didn’t want to seem pushy or sales-y.
  • I just didn’t know what to say.

But, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and did it anyway and guess what?

It wasn’t a great experience for me at all. In my area, most of the networking groups were full of men. I was meeting plumbers, contractors and electricians and while they were all very nice, none of them were going to become my BCE (Best Client Ever). You know, the client you would love to see over and over again in your biz – the people who make your heart sing when you see their name on your schedule.

After becoming more educated by my business coach, I got creative and decided to shift what I had been doing.

Success involves gaining knowledge and making it work for your specific business – being “business brave” and creative so to speak.

This shift in my strategy and thought process allowed me to see the effective-for-me networking opportunities everywhere around me.

For example, just recently I was at the Phonenician Hotel in AZ and I noticed the lounge was full of people who looked liked my BCEs. I went over and asked the bartender what the women were there for. He replied that every day from 2-3pm the hotel has a high tea and it’s always packed. Now I can tell you this for sure, if I lived in this area, you can bet your last $ that I would be paying the $75.00 to attend this tea at least 1-2 times per month with a stack of my biz cards tucked under my high tea hat! 🙂

So ask yourself who your BCE is and where they gather so you can meet them there and start forming relationships. Sometimes, this exercise can take a little time to do because you really do need to put your creative thinking cap on.
