The Bleach Facial Ah Ha Moment

Recently I posted on my Esthetician Mentor facebook page:

“Just got a call from a reporter… she wants an interview on “The Bleach Facial” any details… anyone done this?”

And…

Some of the responses that I got made me stop and think for a moment…

A few people just assumed I was all for it and wondered why I would promote such a thing.

A few people said that I should not talk about something that I know nothing about.

I love your comments and questions and welcome them because they truly help me understand so many aspects of the esthetician world.

These statements made me think about how I approach my business, how seriously I take my career as an esthetician and how I want to be seen as a skin care leader and an expert in my community.

So let me share with you the self-growth and awareness that your facebook comments let me welcome into my esthy world.

1. I always say yes to press coverage for a few reasons. Reasons that are a little different than one might expect…

  • The camera makes me extremely nervous and I know that this means it’s time to step out of my comfort zone and grow. I swear my nose sweats, I stutter my words and you can count on me saying something extremely embarrassing. I will admit I am getting better, but it’s never a pretty experience. Thank god for editing!
  • The news coverage video is always available to me and it makes for a great facebook, email, twitter promo of my biz.
  • I usually gain tons of new clients including the reporter or a member of the camera crew. I did a show for the Style Network 10 years ago and some of the crew still comes in for facials and waxing.

2. If I don’t know the facts about the story I gain knowledge in the research process. This knowledge allows me to form an opinion (which is what most news stories are based on), and the knowledge makes me a better esthetician.

Here’s how I gain my “news worthy” knowledge:

  • You and your awesome facebook interaction.
  • My Rolodex of skin care leaders and educators. For insight on the “Bleach Facial” I actually reached out to Dr. Ben Johnson, Founder of Osmosis Skin Care and got to pick his brain for a bit. He’s not a fan of this facial – btw 🙂
  • I use google.com and buzzsumo.com – these are 2 incredible ways to gain info on any topic imaginable.

3. Again it goes back to me wanting to be seen as a leader and an expert in my community. I want to attract clients that like my skin care philosophy. Press coverage is an amazing way to let your Ideal Client know that you exist and that you are open for biz.

And…

Through the years I have gained the confidence to only speak what feels genuine and authentic to me. This allows me to attract valuable clients to my practice.

I told the reporter the only way I would do the story is if I could share the “Why Nots”.

“Yes this sounds crazy, I am eager to learn more!! An interview about why NOT to do this would be amazing. Could you be available this Thursday or Friday, depending on which day my boss wants to do it?”

Speaking of being seen as a leader and an expert in your esthetician world…

I will be hosting a free webinar on this exact topic with ASCP on March 3rd.
