10 Helpful Tips For A Topnotch Treatment Room

LobbyLike most estheticians, I spend a ton of time working in a small (and quite often dark) treatment room. In spite of being small and dark, my space is far from depressing. It’s quite the contrary; my treatment room makes me feel happy, but most importantly, it makes my clients feel safe and comfortable when they are in my hands.

Since I get a lot of questions about this very topic, I thought I would share ten tips to help you create a topnotch treatment room of your own. I firmly believe that when you feel good in your workspace, you automatically put out the energy of abundance and confidence, which is a beautiful way to welcome in great success.

Tip #1: Invest in comfy bed linens and a nice coverlet.

A few times throughout the year UniversalCompanies.com offers $1.99 shipping. When see it pop up, I purchase new linens for my table along with some of my favorite facial waffle robes.

I also recently purchased a super-soft twin size comforter from Amazon.com. And it’s funny, I have been noticing several of my clients petting it like it’s a puppy. Many of them comment on how they can’t believe how soft it is (proof that the simplest things can make people feel all warm and fuzzy inside).

Tip #2: Remove clutter.

Numerous studies have proven that removing clutter make us more efficient. I know it’s true for me! When I have things organized, I feel energized! Make it a point to go in early or stay late to get and keep your space organized.

Tip #3: Hide those cords.

Many of us have electrical cords everywhere. They look awful! But an even bigger issue is that they are a safety hazard. Hide them, cover them, and get them out of sight.

Tip #4: Pick a wall paint color that flatters skin tones.

This is something that never entered my mind. It all changed when I hired someone to help me update my spa lobby. The first thing she said is, “Your current paint color makes the skin look green. I’m sure you would much rather have it so when your clients look in the lobby mirror, they see themselves with the most amazing looking skin.”

Want to know how to get the right color? Hold a paint swatch up to your forearm (do this on some friends and family members as well) and see what color it pulls out of the skin.

Tip #5: Take photos of EVERYTHING in your treatment room and keep them in a safe place for insurance purposes.

Better to be safe than sorry… ’nuff said there 😉

Tip #6: Label everything.

I know, I know. I sound like a mom, but this is a good reminder for many reasons AND it will make state board very happy if they decide to pay you a visit.

I got my label maker at Office Depot for $19.99 and now that I have one, I use it way more than I would have expected.

Tip #7: Every six months, do a product clean and sweep.

Check inventory and throw away expired items, put a few slower moving items on sale and ditch the crusty back bar that you have overlooked for the last few months.

Tip #8: Hire or barter with a designer/decorator.

Decorating is not within my area of genius so while it was time to update my lobby, I just kept putting it off. The mere thought of doing it myself was overwhelming. One day my client said, “Hire my friend, she has a biz called, Chic In A Week.”

I called the gal, and we made a date. We went to HomeGoods together and filled up three shopping carts. Boom! The process was super easy and the result was an updated lobby full of pieces I would have never thought to incorporate.

Want to know how much she charged me? FOUR FACIALS! She wanted to trade.

Next up on my never-ending to-do list is to get her back in to update my treatment room and then my makeup room.

Tip #9: Lay on your bed or table and look up.

You need to make sure you see your treatment room the way a client sees it. So, you have to go sit and lay in the places your clients do so you can get the same view they have. I bet some of you will find a few dust bunnies.

Tip #10: Fine tune your treatment room vibe with a perfect wall print.

You’ll want to choose something that is in alignment with the look and feel you are after. Then, maybe add a luxurious looking (and feeling) rug and a lamp that creates zen-soft lightening.

BONUS: For the last several months I have been obsessed with orange roses, and they contrast perfectly with the light gray paint in my lobby. I either get them from my backyard or buy a dozen at WholeFoods and put a few in my lobby, a few in my bathroom and a few in my treatment room. Beautiful!
